The Kiwanis Club, an international service club with chapters all over North America and the Caribbean, is coming to Grimsby.

“There’s a lot of great things happening in the Grimsby area,” said Ron Robinson, a Stoney Creek resident and member of the Hamilton branch of the Kiwanis Club. He and fellow Kiwanis member Brian McKeown are heading up the Grimsby group, which is in the centre of the district that spans from Hamilton past St. Catharines.

Robinson says that with the growth the town is experiencing, Grimsby is a perfect candidate for the development and creation of a Kiwanis Club.

“There’s a lot to be done and there’s always a need for children,” said Robinson.

In other communities, Kiwanis raises funds for parks and playgrounds. They also partner with youth groups and programs that teach children safety in the community.

So far, organizers have met with Grimsby aldermen, the director of recreation services with the town, as well as the Foundation of Resources for Teens (FORT).

“A lot of the services are covered; but if there’s any gaps, we’re willing to help,” said Robinson. “Sometimes it’s just supporting the existing outreach programs that are in place.”

He says they are looking for volunteers who will champion initiatives in town and support organizations that service children and youth.

The Kiwanis Club will be hosting their first meeting at the Casablanca Winery Inn on June 12 at 7 p.m.
